Candy Floss, Climate Change and the Rood Fair

Currently, the Rood Fair is taking place in Dumfries. For those who do not know what the Rood Fair is, it is a fair (the title gives it away) held on the Whitesands of Dumfries.

Many Scottish people also call "Fairs" "The Shows". Which I like as it feels far more festive and interactive.

In years gone past, the fair was used as a way for farm workers to find new lodgings for the year ahead (and work). And acted as a religious, commercial and agricultural gathering.

Now it is an event full of candyfloss and fairground rides.

Before moving to Dumfries I had never seen a fair that took place right next to a river.

With the Devegorrilla bridge in the background, it certainly is unique, atmospheric and fun.

Weather and the Nith

However, the weather is hanging over this year's Fair, as it did last year's fair. Heavy rains have brought the Nith to a very high level. Threatening flooding.

This is, of course, something that can happen. However, it feels that climate change is making flooding in Dumfries worse, and more prevalent.

Questions

Which brings forward a number of questions to mind:

  1. How long can the Rood Fair continue by the Nith?
  2. Will the Scottish or British governments pay for increased flood defences?
  3. What other areas of life will Climate Change bring forward Social Change?

As long as weather warnings are heeded and work is done to improve the flood defences, for a lot longer yet. My presumption is that flood defences will be sidelined so Edinburgh and Glasgow can have more money lavished upon them.

However, it is intriguing that even a night out enjoying the sights, sounds and candyfloss of the "Shows" might change very quickly due to climate change and society more generally will have many new events happen and many disappear due to Climate Change.

Now, get down to the shows and enjoy some candyfloss.
