Dock Park: A Review of the BEST park in Dumfries

Dock Park in Dumfries by the River Nith is possibly my favourite park in the entire world - after Jurassic Park of course.

There is a real charm, a sense of history, a feeling of nature and one of the best play parks I have ever come across. Which my toddler loves.

So how do I find Dock Park?

Depending on where you are coming from. My suggestion is if you are in the town centre, head down to Friars Vennel and then walk downriver, and you will come to Dock Park. From anywhere else I suggest that you use Google maps

What is at Dock Park?

Dock Park is a local park within Dumfries that sits next to the river Nith across the river is Troqueer and on past the park if you follow the river will lead you eventually to Kingholm Quay.

The park is a normal council-run park that also is the main park in the town.

What do I like about Dock Park?

Personally, my favourite part about Dock Park is the tree-lined avenues that give you a real sense of "promenading" as you walk down them. As well as feeling nature as well.

What is there to do in Dock Park

Dock Park is of course, not a theme park, so do not expect to see rollercoasters etc. However, it does have things that will keep the family entertained. It has a smashing play park for children, that will allow toddlers to play in the park with 11-year-olds without any problem.

The play park is themed on Peter Pan (which incidentally) and was created in Dumfries.

Right next to the play park, there are refreshment options.

Further along into the park, you will come across a bandstand and then a crazy golf/trampoline/bowls area that for a small fee will allow you to take part in crazy golf, trampolining or bowls.

Further alone there are benches, picnic tables and a wealth of beautiful trees to walk by.

Is there any history in Dock Park?

Yes, Dock Park is home to a memorial to the victims of the Titanic. One of the violinists from the ship's band died on the ship and is commemorated with the other victims with a memorial.

This is also across the play park a memorial to the Norwegian Airmen who died fighting the Nazis during WW2 and who called Dumfries their home airfield.

When is the best time to go?

Anytime.

Can you buy food and drink at the park?

Yes at the start of the park by the play park is The Hut a cafe that sells tea coffees and ice creams. There is also an Italian restaurant and Green King pub that has entrances that can be accessed from the park.
