Galloway - Scotland's "Forgotten Corner"

Galloway is very much the "forgotten" corner of Scotland and indeed is a hidden gem. Why is Galloway so "forgotten"?

It is done, partly to geography, partly to culture, and partly to politics.

The geography of the Galloway region is isolated and transport is not easily accessible. Most people when travelling so straight through the region to either Glasgow or the central belt and through to Northern Ireland.

The cultural reasons for Galloway's forgetfulness are down again to its culture as an area that borders England it is not as "Scottish" as the romantic region of Scotland (the Highlands and Islands) or as culturally relevant as the two main cities.

Economically Galloway is very rural, which is a code word for boring and backward for many people who just would not appreciate its charm and beauty.

Politically, Galloway seems to elect Conservatives to both Parliaments, thus having no allies in Holyrood in the government and being unimportant in Westminster.

All these reasons come together to make Galloway Scotland, a "forgotten" corner or as I like to see it, Scotland's diamond in the rough.

Someone needs to put Galloway on the map.
