How I am going to optimise my Gumroad
This morning, I read a very interesting article by @lifemathmoney, a $1,000,000 seller on Gumroad. A million is crazy money for selling ebooks and downloads.
In it he shared his formula for making money on Gumroad. Which was an excellent overview. It is a superb blueprint of how to make good digital products and how to sell them. Insider secret it's about having a product that provides value, solves a problem and then marketing to your audience.
Although I would say I am not a fan of his content, it is a little too edgy for my liking, but hey, I am a fossil after all.
What does the article say?
Firstly, I suggest that you read the article, as it is packed full of interesting tidbits and advice.
The article is broken down into 15 core components that cover the steps to making your Gumroad better:
Build an audience - you need an audience of people that you can market to as advertising is expensive. Select a platform or two like X, You Tube or Instagram.
Be credible and build trust - your audience needs to think you are credible, have authority, and trust you. So talk about what you know about.
Solve Problems - your audience is going to have problems that need solving. Find a problem to solve and they will buy the product.
Price must be correct - the price must reflect the value and the product must deliver more value.
Have a variety of products - a wide range of products will help you to appeal to a wider customer base and elements of your audience.
Work with people - find other creators and build products together to gain revenue share.
Have affiliates - more links means more sales. Aim for 35-50% commission rate.
Look out for piracy - People will try and steal your products. Keep an eye on Google for the rascals.
Run discounts - use discounts to increase revenue and get more email addresses.
Free products - these must provide value, but also are a create way to market your quality.
Good returns policy - 30 day no quibble good. Add in certain steps for more expensive products. E.g. proof of implementation.
Ask for customer reviews - if a customer reaches out about a product, ask for a review.
Good copy - have good sales page copy. Says it all really.
Learn to launch - launching a product needs hype and anticipation.
Upsell - when people are going to buy the product, offer them alternative products that can increase revenue and improve you
Gumroad Optimisation
Reading through the article, there are several things I am going to implement to my Gumroad over the coming weeks to improve its presentation.
- Continue to build my audience
- Continue to blog once a week - create more focus on home working, work, careers and business. Reduce the flights on fancy.
- Keep tweeting - focus on one platform only.
- Start tweeting about the products
- Create unified branding on my page
- Each product has unique thumbnails and covers. I need to develop my own style and incorporate it throughout each product so that it looks like a “HomeWorkingHenry” product.
- Write a one-page “brand guidelines” that I read before I make any graphics.
- Update thumbnail images
- Update headers images
- Think about my audience problems
- Brainstorm ideas for a range of problems that people who read my content might have.
- Research and look up problems that people have with remote work, home working, careers, and business
- Pick 3 initial problems to solve
- Take a look at the pricing of each product and ask myself, what would I pay for this product
- Build a range of products
- Upload all my old ebooks that I have written and turn them into products to increase the range of products that I have made.
- Start making products that solve problems
- Check for copycats - I have had this on Amazon before.
- Run a three-day discount with 25% off to see what happens.
- Promote the discount across my Twitter platform.
- Create 5 free forever products that will attract people to sign up
- Look at the problems and create something that adds value
- Rewrite my returns policy so that it is a sales feature
- Include the returns policy in the copy as well
- Review the copy on each page
- Review each headline
- Review the body of the text
- Review the copy on the side bar text
- Ask all former customers for a review
- Develop a simple launch process for each product launch
- Make sure each product has a relevant upsell
Next Steps and Final Thoughts
There is alot of work to be done looking at the above, and frankly, if I start doing all the above and only focus on the above I am not going to attract an audience or digital footfall so I do have to take my time doing the following as I only have so many hours in the day once everyone else is asleep.
You can take a look at the work in progress so far.
If you fancy letting me know your thoughts, and have any suggestions on how I could improve, this would be warmly welcome. Feel free to email me at joseph@homeworkinghenry.com
