Severance a deep Sci-fi dive into a corporate maze - Science Fiction Review

Please note this article contains spoilers

Severance - the premise

The premise of this visually distinctive science fiction series has the main characters working for a corporation where there work and home life are separated through an implant which means they are essentially two people living in one body. One lives their entire life at work and the other lives their entire life away from the office.

Severance - the story

The story focuses on a few characters as they start to learn more about the world in which they inhabit (the innies) and the truth on the outside as the grim truth begins to emerge.

Severance - the themes It focuses on themes of friendship, loss, grieving, corporate power, work life, the falseness of our careers and the abuses of power that can go on when workers are unseen.

Severance - what it tells us about the world of work

Or what I think it is about what it tells us about the world of work.

The three main themes towards the world of work I believe

  1. Workers that go unseen can be used and abused by corporate interests - for instance, migrants and undocumented workers are essentially invisible.

  2. At work we have to hide who we are to get a paycheck, even if the work is clearly not real. Or we have to perform whilst at work.

  3. Work has to be integrated into our lives for it to be meaningful and the relationships within the workplace matter to us as part of our social fabric.

My final thoughts

It has been an interesting watch. Enjoyable is not the word I would associate with watching Severance as it is very thought-provoking and does make you question

If you want to delve into the world of science fiction corporate culture, I would take a look at Severance.
