When the Cave from Plato’s Republic meets Science Fiction you get Apple TV's 'The Silo' - Science Fiction Review
The Silo is yet another excellent science fiction from Apple TV (link) based on the book Wool.
Please be advised this article contains spoilers and/or hints, so please do not get mad at me.
The Silo
It tells the tale of 10,000 people living their lives within a self-contained Silo underground.
To summarise (without trying to spill spoilers) the show is a mystery thriller set in a society that is living in the cave from Plato’s Republic.
As a show it is great and as you watch the story unfold it opens MSs up some interesting social, political and economic elements that highlight how a society that has been underground for at least 140 years would develop.
Order and stability seem to be the prime objectives of the Society, as it seems to always be close to collapse and destruction.
There are some excellent set pieces (episodes one and three especially) as well as some great concepts.
Overall there are so many questions that I have.
Questions that are unanswered
- How would you feed 10,000 every day underground?
- How do you continue to keep some skills alive?
- Why would you build the Silo?
- What would being underground for generations do to human health?
- How would you find the materials to sustain modern equipment?
- How would you power it?
- How would you deal with the degradation of the silo?
There are so many questions that it does not capture, answer or would even be that entertaining of a watch.
