The Spectral Salon at Drumlanrig Castle: A Review of a Spooky Walk in the Woods for Halloween

During a sunny, crisp and lovely Autumnal day, what better way to spend it than walking around a forest amongst all the spooky goings-on at Dumlanrig Castle.

The journey up was a real treat; the trees were a riot of everything from lush green to dark reds. The journey up past Thornhill at this time of year really is lovely.

Drumlanrig is intertwined with the history of the Douglas family, which can trace its heritage back over 600 years. The current building that forms the castle and home of Drumlanrig dates from the 17th century and is known as the Pink Palace due to the hue of the local Dumfries sandstone.

It is one of the most intact and finest examples of palace (or great house) architecture around. And like all good Scottish castles, it has a fair few ghostly tales.

In the build-up to Halloween, Drumlanrig castle, maps out an interactive walk through the woods, inspired by all the spooky ghouls, goblins, skeletons, and Witches you would expect from a Halloween Adventure.

This year's theme was focused centrally on the ghosts and spooky stories that a Scottish castle can produce.

I will not spoil the fun, but there is a great story, headless ladies, witches, a ghostly monkey and a grisly surprise. The trail is aimed at children from 4-12; however, as an adult, I got really into it.

At the end, there is a free pumpkin and games (all Halloween-inspired) to play with all the family.

It was good fun, inventive and a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. Plus the cafe does excellent coffee and haggis Panni's.

On Halloween

On Halloween, Drumlanrig Castle is hosting an after-dark walk around the trial with actors. This is aimed at younger audiences; however, it does sound very, very immersive.

Halloween is also the last day Drumlanrig grounds are open for the season, so make the most it.

How to Get There

From Dumfries, take the A76 north towards Kilmarnock. Continue on the A76 for around 15 miles.

At Carronbridge, turn left onto the A702, signposted for Thornhill. Follow the A702 for a short distance, then turn right, following signs for Drumlanrig Castle. Continue along the estate road until you reach the car parks.

The journey takes around 30 minutes by car.

The Final Word on the Horror

The Spectral Salon is spook-tactular. Only wish I could revisit it after dark on Halloween.
